Beautiful Toronto Outdoor Headshots: from a top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer

It has been a beautiful start to our summer season at Liz Caruana Photography now located in Toronto Canada. The transition to the new city has taken a little longer than expected as the pandemic through a loop into things. Regardless 2023 has been great! Businesses are having people back in the office, and headshot sessions have been very busy. Though Toronto can have some pretty cold winters I have had the opportunity to make some gorgeous headshots outdoors with Toronto as the backdrop.

This spring I had the chance to photograph Fanny Hennebo for her new website https://mojomotstranslation.ca/fr/. She is a professional translator and was looking have a photo taken of her that demonstrates that she is approachable, kind, and easy to work with. Translations from French to English or English to French is what she does, so she wanted to make sure that her future clients felt they could connect with her and feel comfortable expressing their needs so they could receive the results they wanted. Our shoot together was on one of the most beautiful days in May. We were at Felstead Avenue Playground and Park and loved how the painted garages made a bright and colourful background.

Earlier this year I photographed Olivia Arnaud-Telycenas in the Toronto Beaches area. She contacted me as her publisher had asked her for a portrait for her new book. She and I talked about how she wanted to be portrayed and how she wanted to be remembered. The process of working with Olivia was fantastic. She is a lovely, upbeat, writer who I am very happy to have been part of her book publishing.

Both Olivia and Fanny loved their photos and the entire process. I hope they are successful in their future endeavors.

Why I love being a top Toronto Corporate Headshot Event and Branding Photographer and Videographer

I love what I do, and like anyone lucky enough to say that, I also have learned a lot from what I do. Some of it is technical, but some of it comes in the form of simple little life lessons we can all apply. Here’s some of the little things you learn as a photographer that you can take with you no matter what you do.

Think ahead. Plan out and visualize your shoot before you even get there, so when you do get there, all you’re doing is setting up and taking shots. We often say “you’ve got your work cut out for you” to mean a lot of work to do, but it actually comes from shoemaking, where having your work cut out for you already meant all you had to do was sew it together. So what this really means is that if you think ahead, you can save yourself some work on your next task and make sure it goes smoothly. That’s something you can apply every day. You can’t prepare for everything, but you can put yourself in the best position to react to the unexpected.

Always carry tea. Maybe it’s a family trait, or maybe it’s the caffeine. Maybe the caffeine is why my family loves tea. But I always keep some with me at a shoot, as a little treat or pick-me-up when I need it. What this means is again, think ahead and prepare, but also that it’s okay to treat yourself when you need it. The little good things are what all your hard work is for, so enjoy them! Plus, tea warms you up when you’re chilly, or when you’ve been hanging from a crane on a windy night to get a shot. What can’t it do?

It’s okay to take breaks and take the time you need. Not only can you not be “on” all the time, not taking downtime when you can means you won’t be on when you need to be. This can be a helpful reminder for self-care and work-life balance, but it’s also a good reminder that good things can’t be rushed. Crunch isn’t your friend if it’s wearing you out and making your work worse. Sometimes it takes time to get it right, and you’re shortchanging yourself and the people the work is being done for if you don’t take that time.

These aren’t huge breakthroughs, just little pearls of wisdom you pick up in this business, and if you pay attention to the lessons you’re being taught every day, you can make life a little better.

How to Pose for a Photo- from a top Toronto Corporate Headshot Event and Branding Photographer and Videographer

How to Pose for a Photo- from a top Toronto Corporate Headshot Event and Branding Photographer and Videographer

Seems easy, right? You just smile, and look in the general direction of the camera. Well, you might be surprised at how much more there really is to how to pose for a photo. Some of the things that come naturally to you might not look like you expect them to in the final image. Fortunately, remembering just a few tips will help you start posing in ways that’ll get you pictures you love. We’ll talk about a few simple things: the 7/8ths angle, the “if it bends” rule, and the head tilt.

The first thing you can learn to do is stop facing the camera directly and squaring up. A better idea is to find the right angle to keep your body at. The 7/8ths angle is the answer; you still look at the camera with your eyes, but turn your face and body just slightly to one side or the other of it for a 7/8ths profile. Whichever side you turn to the camera will be a little more visible than the other, so if you have a side you prefer, choose that one.

A rule that’s easy to remember and makes you look way better in photos is “if it bends, bend it.” It helps you avoid taking photos where you look stiff and robotic and awkward. That can be an unexpected result when your limbs are held straight, but a subtle bend in each elbow and a bend in one knee (placing your weight on the other leg, which also puts a small tilt in your hip) can counteract that.

The last tip can be a little tricky, but you’ll pick it up with practice. Now, don’t get the wrong idea, a head tilt doesn’t mean tipping your head to the side like a puppy! Hold your head straight up, but push it just a little forward and tilt it down a bit. Through shadow and angle this helps define your jawline, which makes for a better photograph. You’ll know when you get it right, because the results are noticeable.

Getting great photos that you love isn’t a mysterious, magical art. These simple posing techniques can make a big difference. Of course, if you want to take it to the next level, working with a professional photographer is a great idea!

How do you get a headshot into a magazine? I did it by making sure Graham Weaver’s best shot was one I took! If you’re wondering what I’m talking about, have a look. If you want to have the confidence to provide a magazine with great images when they want to profile you, it pays to do what Graham and Alpine Investors did, and work with a professional photographer.

Hey, this looks familiar. As you can see, I’ve worked with Graham and Alpine for a while. And as I mentioned before, you can tell your work caught some eyes when your client uses it for almost every image on their website.

That makes sense, because I was part of the process when Alpine rebranded their website and updated their image library for a consistent and vibrant look. My number one and number two tools are clamps, and double stick tape. Double stick tape is the tool I use to fix all sorts of things. Gaping buttons, bulging pockets, from your outfit that you don’t want to steal the shot from you on camera. Clamps are perfect, they’re like tailors without tailoring. I use them to make clothes fit perfectly on a model’s body, so they can move around freely, with the clothes staying in place.

The Art of the Outdoor Headshot-from a top Toronto Corporate Headshot Event and Branding Photographer and Videographer

A corporate photoshoot doesn’t always mean taking pictures in a workplace or at an event. Sometimes, you need to get outside. Obviously this is a great way to set up some stunning backdrops for your pictures, but nature being, well, nature, you might not always find the most conducive conditions out there. That’s where a professional photographer comes in—we know a thing or two about the art of the outdoor photoshoot! Or in the case of this post, a thing or three. Let’s learn a little about the weather, the woods, and the water, and how they play into a shoot done out of doors.

The Weather

This is a big reason to find a professional who knows the best times of day and times of year to get good shots outside. January through March, you might luck out and get a day when it’s merely overcast, which lends itself well to photography, but you’re playing roulette with the rain and everyone’s luck runs out eventually. Needless to say, you don’t want to do a photoshoot in the rain (and I could do without it too). If you want outdoor headshots, your best bet is planning for March through October. There’ll be lots of direct sunlight, but I bring a ton of light-blocking equipment to make sure you don’t look like you’re squinting or wincing away from the sun. And if we shoot between early morning and midafternoon, there won’t be as much light in your eyes to begin with.

The Woods

Trees and greenery are a big reason to shoot outside. A woodsy background can make for some amazing shots, individual or group. But in order to take advantage of all the texture and colour a sylvan backdrop can provide, you have to make sure you’re shooting in the right conditions. Time of day and time of year are still important so the light hits the woods just right to show off all those colours, and so the details of texture look great.

The Water

Shooting near a stream, river or the lake at Woodbine Beach can provide beautiful images, and a lot of people think the ocean makes an even better backdrop. After all, it’s the ocean! And we have so much of it here. Problem is, the ocean doesn’t really look like you might think. It’s usually a big boring field of white unless you’re shooting in Hawaii, really, where it’s an amazing blue. (Now, if you want me to go to Hawaii for a shoot, I’ll take one for the team!)

Just who is Graham Weaver of Alpine Investors? Well, for starters, he’s someone I’ve photographed a lot; if you go check out their website, you’ll find I took just about every shot they’ve got up! Here are some highlights of a photoshoot I did with Graham not too long ago.

He’s a partner in Alpine Investors, and was there from the beginning as a founder. What you might not know is that that was way back when he was still living in residence at Stanford!

That was more than twenty years ago. He finished his degree and went on to get another one, helping to run Alpine the whole time.

Graham didn’t always work in investing and venture capital, though. So how did he get his start? Believe it or not… mowing lawns. Never underestimate the importance of landscaping!

Photo Shoot FAQS-from a top toronto corporate headshot event and branding photographer and videographer

So, you’ve found your way to my site. Maybe you learned something cool while you were here. You’re interested in booking a photoshoot. But what happens during one? Not to mention before and after? This week’s post is a little primer on how the process works for you, and answers the top eleven (yes, you get a bonus question!) frequently asked questions about how a photoshoot actually works.

How do I book a shoot?

It’s easy! You can email me, or you can call to reserve a date and chat about your shoot. I’ll send you over an estimate and an agreement for your approval. Once a retainer and signed paperwork comes through, the date is officially yours! You can pay by cheque, credit card or direct bank transfer. Full payment is due at the end of your shoot. (Please note that no post-production work can commence until final payment is received.)

What is a portrait session like?

My team and I will come to your office and load in our lighting and backgrounds, roughly 1.5-2 hours before the first person is to be photographed. Upon each person's arrival to the set, my team and I will go over your team's vision, then start in on photography—we’ll capture as many images as you desire, then immediately make selections for post production. How long will a photoshoot take?

The minimum time I require for an event photoshoot is three hours. I'll arrive 15 minutes prior to my scheduled shoot time to set up my equipment and check in with you, then 45 minutes prior to doors opening I'll photograph decor and ambiance. After that, I’ll cover the big event following your timeline and capturing all important people.

How much post-production do you do on headshots vs. events?

I provide three levels of post-production. Level 1 is included for all shoots, and involves correcting white balance, brightness and contrast, saturation adjustments, and minor touch-ups like skin blemishes, lint on clothing, or tiny hair fly-aways. Levels 2 and 3 are more complex and intensive, and include alterations like teeth whitening, wrinkle reduction and some figure alterations. All post-production for events is global across images and includes white balance, brightness, contrast, saturation and noise reduction. Each image will be adjusted individually but this does not include touch-ups similar to what I do for headshots.

How long until I get my photos?

Not that long! Post-production typically takes 15 business days. I can shorten this if you really need the process rushed. Once I’m done you’ll receive an email from which you can download all your images.

Do you travel for shoots?

Absolutely! I mainly travel within the San Francisco Bay area, as well as the United States more generally.

How much room do I need to have a studio set up at my office?

I require a minimum of 10’ ceilings and a room of 15’ by 15’ without any furniture that can’t be moved.

What if I don’t have space at my office for a shoot?

No problem! I have a studio in San Francisco with free street parking. Plus, it’s accessible by BART and MUNI.

What about team photos?

You got it, let’s photograph your whole team! Just let me know how many people that is. Team photos are a piece of cake.

What about hair and makeup?

One of my fabulous lighting and digital assistants will be on call to help with any fly-aways, shine, or de-linting. But! They are not professional hair or makeup artists. But I’m happy to recommend some wonderful people who can visit the set for that.

But what if I don’t like having my picture taken?

Not to worry. I make the whole process easy, comfortable and fun, even for the camera-shy. I've been photographing portraits professionally for 17 years and I can connect with everyone in the company from the CEO to the engineer on their first day.
